Edgar Allison Peers, who also secretly published three books as Bruce Truscot, was Professor in Hispanic Studies at the University of Liverpool, and founded both the Modern Humanities Research Association in 1918, and the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies in 1934. His most important research was conducted in the fields of 19th century Romanticism and 16th century Spanish mysticism; he was considered one of the foremost English-language scholars of the Carmelite Mystics, Teresa de Jesús and Juan de la Cruz.
