Overview

Religious historians have often assumed that only Catholics were devoted to Mary, and when they have found evidence of Protestants' interest in her, they have interpreted it as exceptional. Likewise, women's historians have rarely examined how Marian imagery has affected ideals of womanhood. Through an exploration of popular Marian imagery, The Valiant Woman traces the influence of Mary as a shared American cultural figure. The book argues that Mary was an important figure for both Catholics and Protestants in the latter half of the nineteenth century, especially as Americans were grappling with shifting gender expectations.
