Stones and Stories: A Primer on Literary Analysis, Hermeneutics, and Writing

Paperback |English |1532673884 | 9781532673887
Overview
Human beings are interpreters.

-When, what, and how do we interpret?

-Which is more reliable: literal information or symbolic expression?

-What consequences--in school and in all of life--are attached to our interpretative judgments?

We find answers to these questions in stories. Beginning with the question "What do these stones mean?" in Joshua 4, Stones and Stories examines the elements, purposes, and effects of storytelling and story-writing. Written for high school students, Stones and Stories is filled with questions, writing suggestions, sample essays, and drawing exercises to promote meaningful engagement with Scripture and with literature in general. Its questions are suitable for individual reflection and group study and discussion.

Editorial Reviews

"Judith E. Anderson has written a primer that teaches how to analyze a piece of literature, how to understand various figures of speech, how to pay attention to context in interpreting literature, and then how to apply all this in written compositions. [The book] is intended as a primer for high school students [and] could be used by teachers, or by tutors and parents working with students struggling to learn literary analysis and composition.

I found the book personally helpful. Many of us were not paying attention in high school or college, or just enough to pass the class. This is a great refresher for the adult who wants to read well. It also is an excellent refresher in the fundamentals of good writing, useful for those who blog, who have to write reports for their work, who want to tell a story, or to make a persuasive case in a letter to the editor. It is brief, practical and clear. Using the exercises and prompts will make you a better reader and writer. It just may be that you are finally in a place where you know why that matters."

--Robert Trube, blogger, Bob on Books

"God has chosen to reveal himself to us in a special manner through story. Thus, if we want to understand God as he has made himself known and understand the life that he has called us to live, we need to understand that story. In Stones and Stories, Judith Anderson equips students with the tools to interpret the stories God has given to us in Scripture. This book will help students become better interpreters of the most important story."

--Donny Friederichsen, Senior Pastor, Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA), Short Hills, NJ

"Judith Anderson has integrated her three passions--her love for literature (words), for the Bible (the Word), and for teaching--into a textbook that will inspire and instruct students to appreciate 'how potent ... (words) become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them.'"

--Dave Crum, minister

"A charming, informative, and engaging book. Judith Anderson's work is unique. Mixing storytelling with writing lessons, Anderson uses biblical stories about stones (and there are surprisingly many!) to teach students how to communicate in ways both beautiful and effective. If I were tasked with teaching high school students about literary analysis and writing, I would certainly use this book!"

--David Talcott, The King's College, New York City
