As an ordained minister, Joseph has served as a pastor, and as an assistant to a pastor, in five churches. He earned a Master of Divinity degree and a Master of Theology degree. Joseph also entered the U. S. Army as a private, was wounded in Vietnam, and later became an Army Chaplain, until he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994. His awards include three Bronze Star medals (one for Valor) and a Purple Heart. His wife of almost 53 years died in 2016, leaving him with two daughters and three grandchildren, as well as two dogs and two cats.
